The first release on UnitOvOne’s Clear Label dives into the mind of St. Louis’s own Dustin E., label co-owner, producer, and live performance act. The Unbearable Lightness of Seeing LP is a full length concept derived from Dustin E’s recent obsession with handmade electronics, circuit bending and design, as well as some recent droning dark soundscapes leaving the listener disarrayed and submerged in audio textures reminiscent of a sludging swamp. Recorded entirely in single sessions with an alesis ion synth, handmade audio gear, circuit bent toys, and some of Dustin’s trade secrets lying around the workshop, The Unbearable Lightness of Seeing LP delivers 77 minutes of dark ambient soundscapes and droning noise over the span of 5 experimental audio ensembles.

Dustin E is one of the first St. Louis Drum & Bass producers to make a significant dent in the worldwide D&B scene. His style is uncompromising, with his productions embodying hardcore attitude by incorporating a unique flavor of brutal and overdriving breakbeats, sickly industrial-esque basslines and distorted atmospherics.

As a producer, dj and promoter, Dustin has been instrumental in establishing one of the foremost D&B scenes west of the Mississippi. His talents behind the decks have garnered him impressive support slots alongside the likes of Fanu, Technical Itch, Dylan, Dieselboy, Gein, SPL, Limewax, Phace, Infiltrata, Bong-Ra, Basseck, and many others. His efforts culminated in one of the first Therapy Sessions in the United States, and proved to be St. Louis’s largest Drum & Bass event to date. His first release was in 2009 with a VIP remix of Enduser’s “Manoeuvre” on Soothsayer Recordings.

Dustin is currently performing strictly Live PA sets of original material in genres including Drum & Bass, Breakcore, IDM and Experimental Atmospherics, as well as diving head first into the world of DIY audio circuit design and circuit bending to create exclusive and original hardware and bent toys. 2010 will the see the continuation of Dustin E’s grassroots, blue collar productions and LIVE PA sets in addition to his management of UnitOvOne Recording’s Drum & Bass Division, The Grey Sessions, and running his personal circuit bending and noise blog, DongsOnAcid.com.

So being new to circuit bending I have started buying up “standard” toys that have been done to death and have plenty of resources available for learning. The Furby is one of those toys, so I decided it was time to get one done. There have only been 2 bends on this Furby as it was my first and didn’t want to fry the bastard. These are amazingly complex and I decided to make a break out box to avoid cramming stuff into it’s small frame. The 2 bends are a standard “hold” momentary trigger, and a glitch on/off switch. I decided to use a potentiometer in series with the hold trigger. This acts as a constant hold switch with out having to use the up/down motions. Another bonus of the rotary is being able to grab extremely small snippets of audio when messing with the sweet spot. I also have added another potentiometer to the glitch on/off switch to add more resistance between the bend. This brings out some random stable words and phrases while it’s in glitch mode. I currently have one more Furby as well as the E.T. Furby that are still unbent. The next Furby that gets bent will have a larger breakout box with triggers for each one of the Furby’s interaction switches (stomach, tongue, back) as it is rather annoying having to move back and forth between the box and triggering the toy. I have also seen some pretty amazing mechanical step sequencers put together with multiple Furbys arranged to make some insane melodic stuff.

This is a speed bend I did in amazingly under 4 hours for a halloween costume. I only included 2 bends in this thing, since it was a last minute costume and there are a lot more to be added. Currently there is only a diode distortion pot w/ switch and a momentary feedback screech button.

The toy already included a tempo fader and when using just these 2 simple bends the screech and distortion pot amazingly effect the sounds differently depending on the the tempo set.

More info and videos as I get time……once I re-open it to add more bends documentation will be made.

After a lot of planning and hermitage, the time has finally come for the public launch of UnitOvOne’s Drum & Bass label, The Grey Sessions. Our mission is to show that labels don’t have to be confined to certain avenues of the music we have all grown to love and can include diversity and the shades of grey that Drum & Bass has to offer with out compromising quality. With productions from some of St. Louis’s own talented producers, stateside artists as well as some exciting international talent, Grey Sessions promises to start the decade right.

Our first release, slated for January 25th 2010, will start things off proper with two tunes from some of our city’s veteran producers and deejays.

Dustin E. brings to the table a seizure step neck breaker, Aardvarkcore, filled to the brim with heavy edits and breakcore/idm undertones delivering to those who thirst for the absence of light. Cold Fusion & Jamie D. come storming the gates with Botch, a tech step style song that reminisces of how this century started, humans fearing robots. Growling sub bass, swamp stepping drums, and haunting atmospheres all brought together in one composition that is sure to be a favorite among deejays who miss the old days of the Armageddon era of Renegade Hardware.
